The health insurance reform we are proposing will reverse years of unfair insurance company practices: 1) no discrimination for pre-existing conditions, 2) no exorbitant out-of-pocket expenses, deductibles, or co-pays, 3) no cost-sharing for preventive care, 4) no dropping of coverage for the seriously ill, 5) no gender discrimination, 6) no annual or lifetime caps on coverage, 7) extended coverage for young adults, and guaranteed insurance renewal.

Individual Health Insurance VS. Group Health Insurance

Ok so lets contrast individual vs. group health insurance. One thing that a lot of people get wrong is individual health insurance, number one isn’t as good coverage and number two, cost more than a group coverage. Well, these two things are wrong. The first one, lets talk about cost. We find that individual health insurance is about 40% less than any group plan. You can load it up with all the features and benefits you are looking for in a group plan. Sometimes, I think the only thing I am going to put on the side, is really whether it covers maternity or not. So thats one thing you want to make sure your talking to your advisor or agent about. Otherwise the individual plans, I think are really structured so that youre making the right decisions. Yes, they may be a higher deductible, but its your choice where you want to spend your money. We always advocate, take a higher deductible, so that your first dollar coverage is actually covered by an accident benefit. Thats always something to add and think about. The other pieces, you want to make sure your group plan that youre looking, lets say youre coming off of. Look at your features and benefits. Where more than happy to look at, and put a competitive plan together with anyone of our 26 carriers that we have across the country. So take a look and make sure your comparing apples to apples.

How health insurance works.
When I consider purchasing an individual health insurance plan for myself or my family, do I have any financial obligations beyond the monthly premium and annual deductible?
Answers: It depends on the plan, but typically.
•Co-Payments: Some plans include a co-payment, which is typically a specific flat fee you pay for each medical service, such as $30 for an office visit. After the co-payment is made, the insurance company typically pays the remainder of the covered medical charges.
•Deductibles: Some plans include a deductible, which typically refers to the amount of money you must pay each year before your health insurance plan starts to pay for covered medical expenses.
•Coinsurance: Some plans include coinsurance. Coinsurance is a cost sharing requirement that makes you responsible for paying a certain percentage of any costs. The insurance company pays the remaining percentage of the covered medical expenses after your insurance deductible is met.
•Out-of-pocket limit: Some plans include an out-of-pocket limit. Typically, the out-of-pocket limit is the maximum amount you will pay out of your own pocket for covered medical expenses in a given year. The out-of-pocket limit typically includes deductibles and coinsurance. But, out-of-pocket limits don’t typically apply to co-payments.
•Lifetime maximum: Most plans include a lifetime maximum. Typically the lifetime maximum is the amount your insurance plan will pay for covered medical expenses in the course of your lifetime.
•Exclusions & Limitations: Most health insurance carriers disclose exclusions & limitations of their plans. It is always a good idea to know what benefits are limited and which services are excluded on your plan. You will be obligated to pay for 100% of services that are excluded on your policy.
