If health care for individuals is so expensive, why can I find a policy for $173 a month?
July 24, 2010 | 22 Comments
This policy was found at http://www.assuranthealth.com. Why can’t the government give a tax credit to the poor for around $2500 vs. redoing the whole insurance industry?

Because you don’t have a preexisting condition like I do–childhood asthma, or that my friend did-lymphoma at 14 (medically cured at 24), or other things like ADHD, lupus, or allergies.

$5000 deductible?
yeah, right

Great.
Now try finding one for you, a wife, and two kids.

rich people: Way to throw your family under the bus. How do you expect to take care of your kids without insurance?

thanks, Hood. I can always count on you to have intelligent questions that seem insightful but upon closer inspection, turn out to be misleading.
$5000 deductible. Insurance doesn’t pay anything until you pay the first $5k. That’s why it’s so "cheap."
also, who are your preferred providers? Is the network reasonable? What happens after 24 months? I see the office co-pay ($0 – nice) but nothing about prescriptions.

hey now, you better stop making sense on here or someone might actually learn something.

Good for you, not all American’s can get a good policy, or any at all for that matter. I can’t get coverage because I have had a c-section. Also, let’s just pray that if you ever need a bone marrow transplant (God forbid) that your "great plan" would not consider that an experimental procedure…

Wow – a $5,000 deductible and no maternity coverage. What a great plan – as long as you don’t have a pre-existing medical condition.

Sir, your idea it too rational. Nancy Pelosi will never go for it. I personally love the idea. Why does congress insist on making everything so complicated and expensive? Can’t something be fixed without effecting those of us who are happy with our healthcare?
Can you believe that Pelosi and Reid led the charge against the bill that would have bills posted on the internet 72 hours before passage so that we average Americans could review them? The only possible reason for doing such a thing is that we Americans would be completely outraged to see how much crap they put into those things.
Tex A, it was your choice to have two kids. Now it is your responsibility to provide for them.
By the way, I have a pre-existing condition, a heart condition, but I work for a company that would not take coverage through any company that would deny the employees due to pre-existing conditions. Most big corporations have coverage like this.

A $5000 deductible does not help people afford doctor’s visits.
Plus, I’ll bet they drop you for the acne you had when you were 16 the first time you get sick.

Well if you have a preexisting condition I highly doubt this plan would be in your future.
As a matter of fact, chances are that the insurer would refuse to give you a policy if you have a preexisting condition.

I have peripheral neuropathy and no one will take me for less than 300/month unless I used the NC state government insurance but those deductibles are insane and I already have medical bills that i’m paying off

I think the $5000 deductible and the 100% coinsurance percentage have a lot to do with it.
Unless you plan on spending more than 5 grand a year on medical costs, you are going to pay for all of your health care out of pocket.

Yeah, wait until you actually have to use said policy and it goes up to $190 a month

Any pre -conditions there ?
And right now $178.00 a month is a lot of money to me .
Not when I was younger and healthy as I was in my 20’s 30’s and 40’s but being a widow of a veteran and having lost everything we worked so hard for -then getting cancer . Well Life does take a turn you know .

Gosh! All I have to pay each year is $7144.64 in premiums and deductibles! That’s great if I want to pay more than a third of my take home pay for health care just for me! Who cares about the rest of my family!
Your Q failed to note if this policy covers pre-existing health problems. I’ll bet it doesn’t. How much is it if I have asthma or diabetes?

That’s lousy and more expensive than the one I had through my job

$5,000 deductible?
This person is probably a 24 yr. old in excellent physical condition with no prior history of getting sick or even diarhea.

I have a preexisting condition (mitral valve prolapse and dysautonomia) that I’ve had since I was 10 and I still got insurance. A friend of mine has ADHD she got insurance. I think that there needs to be some reform clearly. I think anybody who sees no need for reform is living in a cave. We need to cut costs and possible relax some of the restrictions for preexisting conditions but I refuse to be scared or sob storied into accepting a power grab by our government and a complete overhaul of a system that works for most (the vast majority, some 80%, are insured).
This kind of pisses me off though. I pay $200 a month for my insurance but I don’t have dental. That stinks, I could be paying $173 a month and get basic dental coverage. Thanks for pointing this out, I’ll have to hop on over there and see how it compares with my coverage in other areas, maybe I’ll be making a switch.

A tax cut with that money going to support insurance companies? You’ve got to be kidding.

You do know that insurance policy is a rip off don’t you?
A $5000 deductible? And a cost of $173?
I’m living in Holland at the moment, and buying my health insurance from an American multinational with European branches, and the health insurance costs only $120 per month, with a $150 deductible.
Health insurance is compulsory, but you choose your own private insurer, and they cannot charge you extra for pre-existing conditions.

A lifetime maximum of $11? I would like to sell policies like that if I could find fools to buy them.
